Sean was really nervous about giving Janet her birthday gift, he hoped she liked it.  He didn’t usually shop for a woman, normally he would just give money or gift cards.   With Janet it was different, he really cared for her and wanted to give her something special, meaningful.

When he handed her the the small gift bag and she smiled, he started to calm down.  When her face lit up as she lifted the small box from the bag he got excited.  Now he couldn’t wait until she opened it, he was on the edge of his seat anticipating her next reaction.

Janet was excited when she took the small velvet box from the gift bag.  Was it finally what she had been waiting for!  Had her patience finally paid off with Sean and he gotten what she wanted and expected from him.   She wanted it but she was thinking it wouldn’t be until Christmas.

As Janet opened the small box, with her eyes bucked and shiny ready for what was inside, Sean was anticipating a huge teary eyed thank you as he knew his girlfriend was very emotional.

Janet opened the box and her mouth remained wide opened for a moment but nothing came out.  She wasn’t smiling nor crying or jumping like Sean expected.

Janet was in shock, instead of an engagement ring, it was a pair of pearl earrings.  Although it wasn’t what she was expecting, they were beautiful.  She looked up at Sean and smiled, “Thanks, they’re pretty” she said and closed the box.  They both looked at each other for a moment with a very dumb look on their faces.
