Tina had not heard from her friend Mary since Wednesday and it was now Friday afternoon. It was very strange for over 24 hrs to pass and the ladies haven’t spoken plus they usually try go get together Friday or Saturday on the weekends. Tina decided to call Mary and beat her to the punch today so she dialed Mary’s number, actually she just pressed 3 on her speed dial.
Mary’s phone rang a couple of times and her voicemail picked up, “Hi this is Mary, leave a message”. Tina was not going to leave a message, she knew Mary would call her back when she saw that Tina had called. Wow, she must really be busy at work to not call in practically 2 days nor answer my call. Tina went on back to doing work herself so she could get the end of the week reports done before close of business.
When Tina finally took a breather, she looked at the clock and realized it was 4:30pm. She started organizing her desk and shutting her computer down and it dawned on her, Mary has not called her back. Tina was a little alarmed, that was not like Mary but she figured she was just busy and would call her as soon as she left work.
Tina was in her car headed home and decided to try Mary again. The phone just rang and this time Tina left Mary a voice mail. “look Mary it’s Tina, I know you are not that busy, call me heifer”. Tina became a little uncomfortable thinking that she has called Mary about 3 times and she still has not called back. She decided when she got home she was going to double check her voicemail and email to make sure she didn’t miss a call or an email or something.
When Tina finished dinner, cleaned the kitchen and taken a shower, she checked her voicemail and email. There was nothing from Mary. Now she was alarmed, this is not normal and she was going to call Mary again. The phone just rang but this time Tina left a serious message. “Mary, it’s Tina, I’m worried maam, I haven’t heard from you, please call me”. As Tina hung up the phone, she thought Lord I know Mary has been going through some things, I pray she is ok.
Tina was very restless the entire night, she didn’t sleep well at all. She rolled over and looked at her clock watching the time change from 4:59am to 5:00am. She groaned, rolled over again and her mind wondered back to Mary. “Lord please put your loving arms around Mary, bless her health and strength. Lord I don’t know what’s going on with her but please let her be ok” she prayed.
Tina couldn’t sleep, so she decided to go have a cup of coffee, thank God it was Saturday. As Tina sipped on her coffee, she thought about Mary and how to get in touch with her. They have been best friends for a couple of years so they knew some of each others family. Tina didn’t want to alarm Mary’s family though if there wasn’t anything really wrong.
Tina thought about the last time she went without hearing from her friend and she instantly put her coffee down and went to get dressed. It was 7am as Tina got dressed and she kept going back to the last time she and Mary went a long time without talking to each other. Mary had been suffering from depression for a while and she was struggling to keep her head up. Mary had disappeared from everyone without any notice or trace and then suddenly weeks later she called Tina from a payphone.
Tina had to go and get Mary from some bar on the outskirts of town. She had been to this hotel and was binge drinking but she had no idea how she ended up at this bar. When Mary started to sober up, she told Tina she got scared and felt she needed someone to help her get herself together.
Tina was determined not to let her friend go back down that road of depression alone. She loved Mary and felt Mary would do the same for her plus last time, she attended counseling with Mary. Tina learned of warning signs and ways to help her friend cope with her depression.
Tina tried calling Mary again while she was on her way to her house. She still didn’t get an answer and now she was very worried. Tina listened to gospel on her way to Mary’s house to keep herself calm. As she pulled up at Mary’s house, she got this eerie feeling that something was very wrong. She turned in the drive way and gripped the steering wheel really tight. She closed her eyes and said a prayer before she could get out of the car.
